Examples of positive coping include: meditation, prayer, exercise, humor, music, art, connecting with safe people, unconditional love from pets, taking care of ourselves, reading, nature, sitting quietly with a cup of tea, knitting or doing needle point, helping others, completing tasks that have meaning for us, and anything that pushes us to grow. Make a list of as many coping skills you can think of. Ask others what they would put on their list.

Dr. Goelitz is a writer and a scholar with a wide scope of clinical experience, ranging from working with trauma survivors after September 11th to her role as a psychiatric social worker at a top New York hospital.
